They are hundreds of thousands of podcasts (digital recording of a radio broadcast made available on the Internet for downloading or streaming purposes) online ranging from health related IT to personal podcasts basically covering of genres you can think of, this equates to a lot of content that’s still unsearchable and has not been indexed in most search engines yet. When it comes to indexing audio it’s not as easy as indexing textual representation of data even with advancements in metadata tags, RSS feeds and audio-recognition technology, it’s still much more tedious and challenging for a search engine to catalog the content of an audio files. All that is the past or I should say becoming better now a since plugg a new web startup has taken upon its self to take lip in an attempt to make audio and video files more searchable and I have to say it looks quite promising.
Pluggd’s audio/video search service utilizes speech recognition this is the process of digitally converting spoken speech into text in order to identify points in an audio file that match your search terms.
For example, searching for the word “Manchester won” in a podcast or video about the premier league football will return a “heat map” showing you points in the file that may be of interest to you, with brighter colors indicating a more likely match. Thus, instead of listening through an entire audio file to find the points of interest, you can search for them and jump right to what you’re looking for and save your self the frustration and time of having to listen or watch and entire program.
Having the ability to search within audio and video is definitely a brilliant idea and could potentially open up to a world of untapped content and make it that much easier to find more information on certain topics of interest.
